Are Otherkins just people who are mentally ill and/or extremely deluded?

I,ve found this hard but important subject we should discuss. 


I found it on Debate.org so this kinda represent most of the world's opinion online.

I don't personally believe that otherkins are crazy or mentally ill, even if most of us tend to have other mental issues that are/ are not  related to it. But i needed a boost and even after seeing that question online and how many people said yes,  I still find the opposite camp very comforting. I feel a little down but this  put a smile on my face. They're right, we are NOT mentally ill.

  If society is willing to accept transgender then so to should otherkin be accepted. Both feel they are born in the wrong body and may attempt to alter their appearances. If one is to reject otherkin as a mental illness, then one should reject transgender in the same way. And both were once considered a mental illness, alongside homosexuality.

  I'll grant that I don't consider "otherkin" to be a real thing. It is predicated on the idea of a soul. What evidence is there that a "soul" exists? I suppose you could make it a semantic question and just definition "soul" as being some felt aspect of a person's mind, but then we're getting into semantics.
  
  Plenty of other people have beliefs about souls, it's called religion when organized or spirituality when it's unorganized. In that sense otherkin aren't anymore than mentally ill or delusional than religious people.
  
  If you say you are otherkin to me in real life I say "good for you" and then try to change the subject because I really don't care about this otherkin stuff. If they yap on and on about being otherkin or about being oppressed then that's annoying and I'll let them know that.

  Scientists have never succeeded in putting the human soul under a microscope. Until that happens, no one knows what a soul really is, and whether it even exists. You might say that Otherkins are delusional for believing that their soul is nonhuman. But, following that vein, wouldn't you also say that it is delusional for Tibetans to believe that the Dalai Lama gets reincarnated; for Christians to believe that their soul can enter this magical place called heaven? There is, in fact, no right or wrong answer to what the soul really is--though a person's own conviction may make him intolerant of those of others.

  That's literally it. We ARE human. Biologically human, we acknowledge our bodies so on and so forth.
  People are so ignorant on the topic of Otherkinity due to tumblr it's sad.
  
  Get a grip, the majority of actual Otherkin are in the medical and science field. Many of us are in the military too.
  
  We can't shift into wolves and we don't howl at the moon. We ARE human, and we ARE animals. We're just as animal as apes. So drop the arrogance.

I'll be honest I don't believe most otherkin are otherkin, but either delusional, stuck in escapism, or actually mentally ill (clinical lycanthropy and such) I don't believe otherkinity is as common as the community makes it out to be either. Though I can't agree with the "we are human and we are animals" bit that should be specifically for therians alone even though therians aren't like deceased animals reincarnated persay.

Personally I agree with Seth theres too many people out there claiming they're otherkin/therian/starseed/etc. When they're just plainly fakes or just 12 year olds seeking a purpose, it is that time of age. Though I agree with the transgender thing, 2000 is gonna be a new year and this abuse should be stopped. We shouldn't have to hide, we are still humans on the outside just because of beliefs it shouldn't separate us.

I agree it's not the old times where we burn and hang people for having a different faith. It's supposed to progress not backtrack.

I find it hard to understand what's mentally ill and what's been caused by our society. Taking a step back from the community for a minute, there are people I know who have anxiety disorders. Some people had these disorders from a young age, while others developed them as they got older. Where they always prone to developing anxiety? Was it genetics? Or is it cause by the ever demanding pressure of our society?

Almost everyone I know takes something for something else, and now can't live life without it. For some of these people, the medication is necessary. For others it becomes a crutch that they can't live without because they lack the resources to cope with the issues actually causing the disorder.

Now each person is different, and I can't and won't be the judge. But I've come to accept a long time ago that my reality is different from others. This is the only site online where I've "come out" as otherkin, and don't find it to be a very valid reason for what I feel. Dragons are obviously creatures of fiction.

That being said, there IS no diagnosis for how I feel, nor is there any one category of mental health that I would actually fit into. I feel anyone in this community should always question themselves, and should always try to face the facts to what the other possibilities could be. People are born into what they are in very different ways. One person's aspect of therianthropy or otherkinism WILL be different from someone else's. In the realm of the spiritual, some consistencies occur, but there's no one strict guide. And anyone who claimed to know 100% I'd be wary of.
