The Purpose

Chapter 1

The skies were seen red and filled with terror. The screams of pain were heard. White, black, grey, and brown shapes were fleeing the forest. Red spots marked on their coats.

Many of them fell, some collapsed. Their heads lying silently on cold earth. Bloody snarls, barks, and howls were getting louder. The trees were flying around, the daylight was replaced by never ending black lid.

/ / /
Luna woke up gasping for air. For a moment she stood there. Trying to realize what was going on. She tried to shake off the effects of another nightmare.

This wasn't her first vision about the storm. The storm that would change… everything.

Luna went outside, looked at the amber trees, and the sun… The gigantic woods look like a huge fire, always burning.

The smell of wet leaves, and dry warm earth amused Luna. Unable to wait anymore, she spread her snowy wings, pushed off the ground, and with a powerful swing she flew up.

Looking down, Luna saw the Amber Mountains. The bright orange trees, the golden ponds, and the dark grey rocks.

Everything seemed pretty normal. The world seemed at peace, but it wouldn't be at peace in a while... Luna knew that.

A black shape with wings was standing by one of the ponds. Luna realized it was Silver, her best and only friend. It wouldn't hurt to say hi Luna thought.

When she landed on her fours, Luna raised her tail in a friendly greeting and walked over to Silver, "Hey, didn’t think I'll see you here."

The black winged wolf jumped up, baring her sharp fangs, spikes standing on her neck, her wings… Spread, making her look twice as big. Her blue eyes, now cold and piercing.

Luna backed off, startled.

"Silver… Are you okay?"- Luna asked, her voice shaking.

In few moments, Silver's eyes softened. She realized where and who she was with. Her spikes flattened, and she folded her wings gently behind her back. "Sorry about that. I didn't think it was you…"- said Silver, turning her ears backwards, a sign of distress.

"What's going on? Were you looking in the water again?"- Luna asked, nuzzling her friend.

Silver shook her head in heavyhearted way and stepped back, "No Luna… I mean.. Yes. I received visions. About the… the death of wolves, and the storm, and reapers, with…"

"No. Calm down Silver."- said Luna, walking over to her friend.

Luna looked into Silver's eyes, and her heart skipped a beat. The pain and sorrow was so vivid in Silver that it made Luna shudder.

"Luna, you know the storm is coming. The barrier will be gone in few weeks!"- exclaimed Silver, frustration swirling around her, like a storm around its victim.

"But I…"-Luna started.

"No, just.. go back to your den. I'll visit you later."

With those last words Silver spread her wings, and was gone. Disappearing into the woods, like a black shadow melting into a dark golden background.

Luna sighed, looked at the pond where Silver stood, and started heading towards her home.

As she ran by, Luna noticed a wild stag, grazing by the rocks.

Breakfast Luna thought.

Quietly and cautiously, Luna climbed up a malachite pine. Her talons preventing her from slipping. When she reached the first branch, Luna silently walked to an edge, crouched, and froze.

The stag lifted its head in alarm. Suddenly, Luna jumped down on the beast. Her wings spread, creating an illusion of a gigantic bird of prey more than a wolf.

Her talons clenched around the stag's neck. Her fangs followed, sinking into the neck, ending the suffering.

A moment later it was over.

Happily, Luna started her meal.

Mmm, nice and fresh she thought.

Few minutes later, Luna decided to check how her friend Felix was. She spread her wings, ready to catapult into the air…

All of the sudden she heard a yelp for help. Felix she realized.
Without hesitating, Luna tore in the direction the yelp came from.

A second later she saw a strange scene:

Felix was pinned to the ground, a tan colored wolf standing over. His wings spread, his spikes tensed up. Snarling, he kept snapping at the fox. Felix, barely dodging the wolf's fangs, kept screaming for help.

Luna's eyes turned red with rage, snarling, and barking, she howled savagely. The tanned wolf turned around, letting the defenseless fox flee.

His eyes army green, turning to black now. He started stomping from one foot to another, barking furiously, his tail straight up, his ears turned back. He was challenging her.

Dang it Luna thought. The wolf was almost twice her size. His talons bigger, clawing the earth violently.

Luna raised her tail, spread her wings, and let out a war howl.

The wolf leaped at her, his wings spread, giving Luna no chance of escaping. He opened his mouth and bit down her scarf. With a painful yelp, Luna backed off. Her blood pumping crazily, her head spinning.

The wolf was ready to attack once more. But Luna was quicker this time. She jumped aside, then with her wings spread she bounced on the wolf. Her talons sunk into the stranger's neck. Her barked madly and almost snapped at her ear.

Luna flew up and charged at the wolf. Without a warning he threw her away by her scarf, his eyes burning Luna.

He lunged at her, pinning her to the ground, the same way he pinned Felix. Talons were sinking through Luna's skin.

All of the sudden she bit in his front leg, the wolf jerked away with a yelp. Using her moment, Luna rolled away, then stood up.

It felt like someone was crushing her bones, she felt like giving in.

The tanned wolf was standing few feet away from her, his wings spread, snarling.

Luna made a step forward, and stumbled. After another step she fell on the cold ground, gasping and panting. The scent of her own blood was overwhelming, the image of the snarling wolf was a blur now.

"I… I can't.. do… this… anymore…"- muttered Luna.

Everything went black. The lifeless silence was surrounding her. Luna thought that this was the end.

/ / /
Luna was looking at the black shadow in front of her. It was shaped as a huge wolf, its eyes glowing silver. The shadow was standing still, deadly still. Luna looked around and saw that she was sanding on a cliff. Beneath her, an endless black sea was swirling, and hitting the rocks, as if it wanted to take Luna with it.

The black shadow kept staring a Luna. Looking through her flesh and soul. It had no pupils, only a dark silver glow. It looked demoniac, it made Luna feel… Trapped.

Suddenly the cliff disappeared. Luna was falling into the sea. She tried to open her wings. With terror she realized her wings weren't there. She was going to die.

The black sea was a gigantic monster that kept hitting the rocks violently, the waves growing stronger and higher. It wanted Luna. Wanted her dead.

Luna kept falling, she saw the sharp rocks now. Waiting for her. Impatient to go through her ribs and straight to her heart.

Finally, she hit the sea. She felt as if she got hit by lighting, her body was destroyed.

/ / /
"NO!"- Luna screamed in agony. She jumped on her fours, panting hard. The memories going through her mind. Her heart was racing. She looked around wildly, as if she's gone mad. Cold sweat was all over her neck and back. Her legs were trembling with fear.

"I am alive…. I am alive…"- Luna whispered under her breath. She realized that she was in her den. She was home, safe and sound.

A moment later a black shape walked in.

Luna screamed in terror. She collapsed on the floor, shaking violently.

The black shape ran to her, its eyes ice blue.

" Hey, it's okay. It's me, Luna. It's Silver. Calm down."-said the creature.

Luna looked up, she saw her dear friend standing. Silver's eyes were filled with fear and worry.

"Wh-where am I? What… happened.. to me?"-asked Luna, hearing her own blood pumping in her veins.

"You… don't remember? Well, I found you unconscious in the woods. You were covered in blood. So I dragged you here."- answered Silver, her voice trembling a bit.

Luna didn't answer, instead she rose slowly, and walked out of the den. She saw the woods and the mountains. They were standing peacefully, the sun was still out. The birds were still singing. Yet, there was an unusual tension.

"Luna?"

Luna turned around and shook her head, "Yes. I mean thank you sister. I wouldn't survive without you… Look, I.. Uh.. I have to go somewhere now. I will be back."- answered Luna, rushing.

She was ready to fly out from the den, her thoughts were all mixed together. Buzzing in her head, like a storm.

Silver's voice made her come back in reality, "Where are you going? What's going on? We need to disc…."

"I am sorry. I really wish I could explain. But…"- Luna hesitated. Her head turned around, she looked into the sky, "I … uhh… I really have no time to explain."

With those words she flew out, leaving Silver looking at her, as if whatever just happened made no sense.

Chapter 2

Luna was flying over the woods. Looking for that spot, the spot where she fell unconscious.

In few seconds she noticed a sandy spot, with red all over it. Luna took a big breath and landed on soft earth.

She breathed in the air. The scent of two wolves, one male and one female, the smell of cold metallic liquid… blood. She realized. Her own blood.

All of the sudden the memories came to her. The fight, the fox, and the strange tanned winged wolf.

With a sigh of frustration, Luna walked to a puddle of water that was near by. As she looked in the water, the visions came to her.

The white winged she-wolf fell on the ground, her eyes closed. Another winged wolf, a tanned male, walked over to her. He sniffed her head. Suddenly, his eyes changed in splits. They were filled with terror, as if he just realized what he did.

He grabbed the wolf by the scarf, and dragged her under the pine tree. Then, he raised his head and let out a howl. After that, he spread his wings, looked at the white she-wolf one more time and whispered, ""

A second later a black creature came. It walked around the area, founding her sister, laying under the pine. The tanned wolf hid behind the rocks, rubbing himself on them, to block his scent.

The black she-wolf picked up her sister and flew in another direction.

In about two minutes, the tanned male came out. He gave the forest one last look, then flew away. Disappearing into the golden background.

Luna came back to reality. She must find that wolf. He knows something. She can sense it.

Closing her eyes one more time, Luna focused on the tanned wolf. A moment later she saw him laying under the oaks.

I must go there she thought. Spreading her wings, she took off into the air.

/ / /

Luna landed on one of the oaks, crouching silently, as she sat down. Looking down she saw that exact wolf that she fought. His head was on his paws, his eyes closed.

Now is my chance.

With a warning howl she jumped on the winged wolf, her talons sinking into his wings, while her back feet were preventing him from escaping.

The wolf gasped in surprise and tried to bit Luna's front paw. She snapped in warning, "Stay calm or I'll tear you to pieces!"

The wolf's body relaxed. Surprisingly, he laughed, "Ha, yeah go ahead. I want to see how you'll tear me to pieces with those crow talons."

Is he… laughing at me? He thinks… that's funny? What the hell is wrong with him? Luna was confused. He can’t just make fun out of her. She would kill him, yet he takes it as … a joke?

The stranger took advantage and slipped away. He rose slowly, his army green eyes now lime green. He was grinning like a pup.

"What's so FUNNY?!"-growled Luna in annoyance.

"Ha ha, you are so cute when you are angry."- he laughed.

Luna shook her head. No, no. This is NOT how it should be.

He tried to kill me last time…. Who IS this guy?

She cleared her throat and asked, "What is your name?" Her gaze was burning him alive.

"My name is Alf. Why? Did you come back from the dead to chat?"-said the wolf playfully.

"I have no time for this.. Alf. I need to ask you something very important. It is about the…"-Started Luna.

"The storm? Yeah I know."-Said Alf. Suddenly his tone became colder, "Forget about it. There is nothing you should worry or know about."

Alf started walking away, Luna ran to him, knocking him on his side, "What?! You MUST tell me! The world is at danger and we must…"

"NO!"-Alf snapped, "Urgh, look leave the subject. You shouldn't fill your tiny brain with things like that. Everything has a purpose, even when it doesn't seem like it does."

Luna's jaw opened, "But I HAVE to know what's going to happen!"-she barked desperately.

"Drop it."- said Alf and took off into the air.

Luna thought of following him but changed her mind. "Alright! FLY AWAY! FLEE LIKE A FRIGHTENED PUP!!!! WHO GIVES A SH…"-Luna slipped and fell into a puddle of mud. The liquid earth was going down her face.

She stood up and growled. That guy was neurotic, yet he knows something I don't. If only he didn't act like a total jerk…

Realizing that there wouldn't be any success today, Luna started heading home.
/ / /
When she returned to her den, Luna noticed Silver sitting by the birch, which almost seemed golden.

"Is everything alright?"- asked Luna with a quiet voice.

"I want to ask you the same thing. What's going on, Luna? Why are you acting like this is the end of the world?"-Silver's eyes were filled with concern.

Luna let out a big breath, "Ah, it is nothing. Just few things going on…." Luna paused. "The world is going to end"- she said under her breath.

Silver stood up and smirked, "Oh Luna, you are so young and you have so much to learn. The world will never end, nor will you ever die. Your soul always lives, with each life, it carries the memories and experiences from your past. Those little memories are pieces of puzzles that come out in your life out of the blue. You can't change that. Every living thing dies, despite its own will."

Luna sighed, "Yeah, I know… But… why do we have to die? Why does sometimes you just die when you haven't experienced all the things in the world! Why do we have to die when there is so much out there? Why do we have to die when there are creatures around us who love and care for us? Why---"

Silver interrupted, " There is always a reason. Every time you die or get a new life, you develop more, you experience new things. Every life you live has a purpose. Every one of us has a purpose here. Even if you were killed the moment you were born, even if you died during the fire----"

"No! Stop it Silver!"- Luna turned away with tears. Her young mind was filled with confusion and misunderstanding. After a few moments, she spoke in whisper, "But… why? Why do we have to develop if we die later? Why do we have to live now if we die anyway ? We won't remember our past… The people who loved us… Will be heartbroken for the rest of their.. lives. It will be useless and… painful."

Silver turned her head to the sky, "I know… But there is a purpose for that. A purpose that you will find out yourself. A purpose you carry in your soul and flesh. Goodnight Luna."

Then, she flew away. Disappearing into the night sky.

Luna wanted to scream out Silver's name, she wanted to fly after her. She wanted to be with someone, someone who will comfort her.

Realizing that she would have to fight this on her own, Luna stormed out of her den, into the dark forest.

Chapter 3

Her white feet were beating on the ground, throwing the clutches of earth sideways, as she ran. Her snowy wings were folded, tensed. Her eyes were filled with fear and pain.

The forest around Luna was dark and frightening. The trees, which seemed gold in day, were now standing there like monstrous figures, with their branches spread out like blades. The ground was moist and the thick fog was floating in the air, as if it was a dead messenger trying to find his place in the night woods.

Luna's breath was heavy when she finally stopped on a cliff. Confused, frightened and lost her eyes were. She looked around, trying to spot a living creature that she could talk to, someone who would tell her the meaning.. The purpose of her existence.

Luna scanned the horizon one last time, then she dropped on the ground. The hot tears were rolling down her snow white cheeks, Luna felt neglected. But more than that, she felt empty and abandoned. There was no one to help her, there was no one who could comfort her… There wasn't anyone who could be able to find Luna's purpose in life.

Hysterically she started howling. As her song of heart grew louder, her heart became more strained, her chest felt choked, but her howl grew stronger with every note. She prayed to the skies, to the moon, and to the forest itself. She prayed for help, she prayed for… hope.

Without realizing it, Luna's eyes closed on their own. The next thing you know, she was on her side, sleeping peacefully as it looked like. Although it seemed like if her mind would never be able to rest from all the questions and searches for answers.

Chapter 4

The sound of a blue jay rang into Luna's ears. She opened her eyes slowly, trying to understand what's going on. Suddenly she realized that it was noon.

Ugh, I must have fell asleep in here… Luna thought.

When she was ready to go for a walk a strange screech echoed behind her.

Jumping up with surprise, Luna span around. A light brown shape was standing between the trees, its eyes glowing like green diamonds.

Few seconds later the tanned wolf, Alf, came out.

"Well, good morning there."- Alf said with a cheerful tone.

"What's so good about it?! What's the point of waking up alive if we all will die some…. Wait a moment. What are YOU doing HERE?"- Luna let out a warning growl.

"You can't fight me, I am the same specie as you. Plus, I a twice as big. But if you really have to know, I was here since last evening. I heard some lone wolf howling from agony, so I decided to take a look."- Alf's eyes were focused on Luna.

Hesitating for a moment, Luna answered sharply, "Ugh… Well for the future- you should mind your OWN business."

"I would but I couldn't leave you in pain by yourself. No one should ever be left alone with their thoughts, or else they would get devoured by them."- Alf's voice grew serious.

He looked at Luna, and she saw some hidden insight. "Yeah, well what do YOU know about being lost and confused and… neglected from the world?! Huh? What do you know about----"

"I know more than you think I do, and more than anyone would ever imagine. I hold knowledge about things I've seen and went through. I know how you feel. Just because sometimes the world seems cold and rejecting, it doesn't mean that you are abandoned."- Alf turned around and spread his wings.

Luna jumped up from fear, "Where are you going? Are… you going to leave me here?" She didn't want to be left alone. She didn't want to be left to her thoughts. Luna knew that Alf could… save her. She felt something from him.

"I am not leaving you. Come, I will show you something."-said Alf calmly, with his cheerful voice as usual.

Smiling weakly, Luna spread her wings. As they took off into the air, Luna's heart felt easier, as if someone has cut few chains off her soul.

They both soared through the air, flying in peace.

"What do you want to show me?"- Luna asked impatiently.

"Shh, just listen and watch. Look beneath your paws. Look beyond the sights and you'll see…."- Alf whispered and looked down.

Luna followed his gaze, suddenly her heart froze.

The golden forest was standing majestically, shining from the sunlight. The dry grass and the dead brown leaves were giving the imaginary warmth to the life around them. Every stream, every rock, and every tree was sending some kind of remark to the World. As if they were showing the Gods that they will always be there. Maybe burned, maybe devastating… Yet, they know that the life will come back to them. They know that they will die sooner or later…. Returning refreshed and young, developing and going under the cycle again, with fresh powers.

Luna was beginning to understand now. The life around her was dying and rebirthing every single day. Every minute there was a leaf falling off, yet somewhere there was a bud blooming.

She realized that life was going under a cycle every second there is. Things and creatures died, however the new ones were born, bringing the world a fresh outlook and insights.

/ / /

Every day since Luna's painful night on the cliff, Alf and her would fly over the forest and mountains, observing the world around them. Noticing every new change in life.

The world seemed at peace, like a gentle mother that was taking a nap, while protecting her children.

As time passed by, Luna became more connected with Alf. She noticed that his eyes were lime green almost every single moment. And Alf noticed that Luna's eyes were always glowing with joy, and understanding.

Later on they became soul mates, like two beautiful birds- one is an eagle and one is a swan. The would fly together the whole day, then meet the night together under the moon.

Everything was great, or at least is that's what everyone thought.

/ / /

One morning Luna woke up and noticed that Alf wan nowhere to be seen. In worry, she trotted outside and sighted the tanned wolf standing by the lake.

Luna walked over to him, Alf wasn't facing her.

"Alf… Are you okay? Is anything wrong?- she asked.

Alf still didn't turn around.

Luna nudged him with her nose. A moment later, Alf collapsed on the ground like a stone. Luna bounced aside for a moment, her eyes wide and filled with terror.

Alf's body was lying lifelessly on the ground, the feathers in his wings were falling on the ground, one by one. His sides weren't rising. He was dead.

A sudden rush of sorrow came on Luna. Like wild dogs it tore her heart in pieces, the claws of grief scratching and leaving scars on her mind. This is not happening. It couldn't. This wasn't real.

Yet, deep inside Luna knew, that Alf would never rise again.

A trumpet sound came out of nowhere. Luna stepped back and looked at the sky. It was turning dark and the clouds were forming tremendous shields of black mass. The wind became more violent and rapid. The leaves were swirling in the air wildly, the branches of the trees were being torn away by the massive outbreaks.

Luna's mind was filled with terror. The world around her was being destroyed. Pieces of rock were flying in the storm, the trees were falling.

But the wind just became powerful with every blow.

A piercing howl made Luna turn back, Silver was standing, her claws dug into earth for support.

"LUNA! RUN! RUN TO YOUR DE----"-Silver's voice broke off. A moment later blood poured out of her mouth. She fell on the ground. Luna saw a sharp branch sticking through her back.

"NO! SILVER! NO!"- Luna's screams were hysterical, she couldn't take it. The world took her sister, and her soul mate. And now it was destroying itself.

She tore to Silver's cold body, her eyes were filled with horror.

No, no, no!!!! Please NO! Luna was screaming on the inside. Her heart was broke and smashed by sharp stones of pain.

The storm was getting intense, the trees were tearing off the ground with their roots sticking out.

But Luna did not care about the storm, nor the thunder in the skies. She lifted her head up whispering to the world, "What was my…purpose?"

In a flash, Luna felt a vigorous blow on her upper back. With a gasp, she dropped on the ground, seeing a huge rock lying by her, covered in blood.

Luna's spine was broken. But her heart was shuddered in pieces. With a last second of her life she thought,

What is my purpose?

Chapter 5

Luna opened her eyes, she saw a light glow around her. Somewhere the birds could be heard.

She was standing in the middle of a green field. Nothing around her but the golden yellow light.

Suddenly a clear lake appeared out of the blue, Luna walked over to it and looked inside. She saw her reflection.

Then Silver's, then Alf's.

With a gasp she turned around and saw her two beloved ones standing in front of her. Undamaged and alive.

Luna broke off to them, nudging and nuzzling her sister and mate, "You both are alive! We are alive Silver! Alf, we made it!"

"No, we are dead, Luna."- Alf said calmly. His smile appearing like back in the times when they were in the amber forest.

"D-dead? What do you mean… But.. You are here and we are safe. I don't under---"

"Luna, we were all killed by the storm. The forest was destroyed. Everything is gone now."-Silver said, reassuring her sister.

"But.. but… Why then--"- Luna started.

"We lived our part on Earth, we had our mission completed. We died as all things do eventually. Now we are here. A place where your inner soul meets the one it lost in other lives…. But we have to go now, Luna."-said Silver, a weak smile appearing on her face.

"What?! Go?! NO! DON'T LEAVE ME HERE! PLEASE, NOT AGAIN!"-Luna screamed. She didn't wish to be alone. She wanted to be with them. With those she loves.

"It is alright Luna. You will be rein created. You will have a new life, new body, but your soul will never change itself. It will just block the old memories that way you can enjoy your new life and gather more experience."- said Alf, giving Luna a nudge on a cheek.

"But.. I don't want to forget you, and Silver, and the forest… And my life… I don't want to!"-Luna was crying. She loved those two. She would never want to forget them.

"Hey, relax. We will always be with you. As you grow and develop, you will receive fragments about your past life and us. We will always be with you, in new bodies and in a new life of course. However, your soul will tell you if it's us when you meet us. There is no need to worry sister. We are always here, in your heart and soul if not flesh."- said Silver.

Alf whispered "goodbye" and the two winged wolves faded. Leaving Luna alone in the field.

Suddenly a voice came into her head. It said,

Life is not a problem

To be solved, but

A reality to be experienced.
